Back to the Future Lighting

In early 2024, Aoshima had released a new DeLorean for his Back to the Future model series. I think it should be one of the best subjects to add lights to. Together with our launch of the blinking LED and the light strip, I kicked off this project to test the new modules and see the actual outcome.

Scale model : 1/24 DeLorean Time machine from Back to the Future

Modules used : LM-54W (White) x 7

: LM-54R (Red) x 2

: LM-54Y (Yellow) x 5

: LM-54G (Green) x 4

: LMF-75Y (Blinking Yellow) x 2

: LSM-11IB (Ice Blue) x 3

01 Chassis and dashboard

Added 4 green 2 red LEDs to simulate the underglow lighting effect.

Added 3 white LEDs for the dashboard lighting.

Testing the effect.

02 Flux Capacitor

Added a yellow LED for the flux capacitor.

Used 1mm transparent rods to divert the light.

03 Head lights

Added 4 white and 2 yellow LEDs for the head lights. The coil is for the ice blue light strip. (It's an engineer sample. Final product will be warped by PVC for protection purpose)

The light strip is around 2mm in diameter. It just fits inside of the rail.

04 Light strip at the tail

Added 2 blinking yellow LEDs (Larger in size) for the indicator lights, and 2 red for the brake lights.

Do not overlap the coils; else the inductive power will be blocked. Besides, the light strip is ~10 cm long; you can simply cut off the excess length, and the remaining part will still work fine.

05 Summary

Sorry I didn't took much photos during WIP. Overall, this Aoshima kit have a good fitting (except the light rail at the back) and the details are great. It's fun to build.

After testing the light strip, the outcome is surprisingly good and match to how it looks in the movie. The installation is straight forward, all you need is finding enough room to hold the coil horizontally. The light strip is ~10cm long. You can simply cut off the excess length, and the remaining part will still work fine.

I have tested the blinking LEDs as well, but they can't be shown in the still photo. They are similar to standard LM-54 LED module, but a bit larger in size.

I hope this demo will help and give you some inspiration. There are no fixed rules for installing the LED module and the light strip. Creativity is always the key. Have fun and happy modeling!
